Explore South Africa on foot ! The Rhino Trail is designed for hikers who want to explore the country in depth. The theme of this tour is to discover areas which are only accessible by foot. The program includes a hike in the mountains of the Drakensberg (Dragon's Mountains), discovery walk of the Kingdom of Lesotho, a trek along the Wild Coast and the icing on the cake: a wildlife observation hiking in the bush !

Day 1: Soweto

Reception and assistance at Johannesburg International airport by our representative.



Walking tour of the famous township of Soweto with your local guide. You will pass Vilankazi Street where the houses of 2 peace nobel prices Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu are, the Hector Pieterson Museum and you will soak up the atmosphere of the township, an experience not to be missed to better understand South Africa. Duration: 3 hours.

Day 2: Soweto - Witsieshoek

Drive to the Drakensberg mountains at the foot of the Amphitheatre. Estimated travel time: 4h30.

Day 3: Witsieshoek - Sentinel car park - Royal Natal - Sentinel car park - Witsieshoek

Drive to the Sentinel Car Park. Estimated travel time: 10 min.


Departure for a full day hiking to the top of the Amphitheatre, the most spectacular site of the Drakensberg mountain range, a 4 km wide rocky wall. From the top of the Amphitheatre flow the 948 meters Tugela falls, the second highest waterfall in the world.

The start of the hike is in the Sentinel Car Park from where you have a beautiful view of the peak Sentinel as you go round. You start on a well-maintained path that climbs gradually to the foot of the Sentinel peak. The path skirts the mountains before joining the famous chain ladders securely locked in the rock. You climb two ladders, one on a height of 40 meters and the second on 20 meters. After the ladders, an easy walk leads you to the source of the Tugela Falls and at the top of the Amphitheatre. Take time to explore the summit and enjoy stunning views of the Drakensberg Mountains with South Africa on one side and Lesotho on the other side.
Hike back to Sentinel Car Park.
Ascent of approx. 2800 meters. About 6 to 7 hours return walk.

Day 4: Witsieshoek - Underberg

Departure to the southern Drakensberg to Underberg, a small village less than 20 kilometers from the foot of the famous Sani Pass.
Estimated travel time: 5 hours.

Day 5: Underberg - Sehlabathebe National Park

Vehicle transfer to Bushman's Nek, the border post between South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho (45 minutes).
Meeting with your local guide, crossing the border and hike surrounded by the peaks of the Maloti mountains. You enjoy the beautiful scenery until you reach Sehlabathebe National Park.
Oldest national park in Lesotho, the remote Sehlabathebe park is only accessible by 4x4 vehicle or with traditional Basotho transportation: on horseback and on foot!
Dinner and overnight in a shelter at an altitude of 2500 meters.
Approximate duration of the walk: 6-8 hours depending on the pace.

Day 6: Sehlabathebe National Park

Departure for a day of hiking in the heart of Lesotho, through beautiful valleys and mountains. Encounters with the Basotho people, easily recognizable by their conical hats and the traditional blankets that they use to get warm. Visit the village of Sehlabathebe (also called "Tomato Village" by the locals) and its inhabitants and discover Bushmen rock paintings. Back to the shelter for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Sehlabathebe National Park - Underberg

Descent through the spectacular scenery of the Maloti mountains. You meet with the vehicle at the South African border. Transfer to the village of Underberg.

Day 8: Underberg - Mbotyi

Departure to the Wild Coast and the coastal village of Mbotyi at the mouth of the estuary of the Mbotyi river. Estimated travel time: 4h30.

Day 9: Mbotyi

Several beautiful walks are offered in this area of the Wild Coast. But the most impressive one must be the Waterfall Bluff hike.
Hike to Cathedral Rock, a cathedral shaped rock formation, and several waterfalls including Waterfall Bluff, which flows 100 meters high directly into the Indian Ocean.
Estimated walking time: 8 hours.

Included : guide (hiking), picnic lunch, room & breakfast, dinner

Day 10: Mbotyi

Half-day hike to a local community. Meeting with the villagers and discover their traditions. School visit, local beer tasting and presentation of a community project in the region. Picnic lunch at a spot overlooking the valley with views of the ocean.

Day 11: Mbotyi - Salt rock

Drive to Salt Rock. Estimated travel time: 5h30. Possibility to visit Durban on the way.

Day 12: Salt rock - Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Park

Drive to the Zululand and the Hluhluwe-UImfolozi national park. Estimated travel time: 3 hours.
Safari to the camp inside the park.

Day 13: Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Park

The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi reserve is the oldest reserve in South Africa and has a very rich fauna, among which a population of about 1,000 white rhinoceros. You discover this reserve on foot with a guide expert in the fauna and flora of the reserve. You follow animal tracks and encounter the wildlife in an area of the park that is only accessible by foot.
Night at the heart of the reserve in a tent with mattresses.

Day 14: Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Park

Second day of walking safari with your guide to spot animals of the african bush.

Day 15: Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Park - St Lucia

Road to the St Lucia estuary. Estimated travel time: 1 hour.

This estuary is a World Heritage UNESCO site established for the protection of a unique ecosystem: more than 300 bird species have been recorded there, including the osprey, and 12 species of herons, who live in harmony with hippos and crocodiles in the largest salt water lake in Africa.
